Newton Abbot is a lively market town that has traded since the 1200's but really owes its growth to the arrival of the railway in the 19th century. It is known as the gateway to moor and sea due to its position between the two. A main feature in the centre of town is St Leonard's Tower which is all that remains of the medieval chapel of St Leonard.
Forde House in the south east corner of the town was built by Richard Reynell in 1610 the extensive grounds now make up Decoy Country Park with an abundant wildlife to see and leisure activities to participate in. At the opposite end of town is Bradley Manor a 15th century Manor House run by the National Trust and in its own secluded woodland setting.
Tucker's Maltings near to the railway station is the only malthouse in the UK open to the public it produces malt for over 30 breweries producing 15 million pints of beer a year.
