The remains of a 12th century shell keep on a motte covered in trees and a few stones visible on top. Partly demolished in 1228 and was ruins by end of 14th century.
Berry Head Forts
Two forts built on an Iron Age site overlooking Torbay. Built on a pre-existing Iron Age fort site. Built in 1793 to defend against invasion by the French and was strengthened in 1803 with limestone walls and gun batteries. The ramparts remain today with the former artillery house displaying information about the site.
Berry Pomeroy Castle - English Heritage
Set in a deep wooded valley is the 15th century romantic ruins of the Pomeroy family castle. Supposed to be one of the most haunted ruins in the British Isles, having several legends associated with it. Woodland walks from car park offer beautiful views of the ruins from below.
Dartmouth Castle - English Heritage
One of the most well preserved and picturesque castles in England, over 600 years old situated on the Dart Estuary. Fascinating infrastructure of defences, building begun in 1388 by John Hawley to defend the busy vibrant port of Dartmouth. You can take boat trips on the river to the castle.
Holwell Castle
The well preserved earthworks of a Norman castle built around 1100 situated by the River Heddon.
Lydford Castle and Saxon Town - English Heritage
Situated on the edge of Dartmoor is a square two-storey tower on a motte inside a bailey dating from 1195. To the south is an earlier earthworks Norman Castle and to the north Saxon town defences.
Okehampton Castle - English Heritage
The remains of the largest castle in Devon and one of the largest in the South West. Situated in an outstandingly picturesque setting in a wooded valley on the edge of Dartmoor. The castle started of as a motte and bailey castle with a stone keep after the Norman Conquest, was then converted into a sumptuous residence in the 14th century by the Earl of Devon. Lovely woodland walks nearby.
Royal Citadel - English Heritage
This 17th century fortress at Plymouth overlooking the Plymouth Sound was built to keep out the Dutch and is still in use by the military today. The Royal Citadel was the most important English fortress for over 100 years with its 70-foot high walls. In the 1750's the fortress was equipped with 113 guns.
Salcombe Castle
A ruined Tudor castle that stands on an isolated rock on the beach. Built in the 16th century during the reign of king Henry VIII for protection from French and Spanish pirates. Today remains of a curtain wall, small square tower and large round tower. The fortress is easily reached on foot at low tide.
Totnes Castle - English Heritage
A classic Motte and Bailey castle situated on a commanding position over the River Dart. The castle has spectacular views over the town towards the River Dart. Originally built during the 11th century in the form of earth works then leter on as a motte and bailey. Then during Norman times as a stone walled motte and bailey built over the original wooden walls. A later stone shell-keep crowns its steep mound.
