Westward Ho! Is the only town in England to be named after a book. Charles Kingsley wrote his best selling historical romance whilst staying at Bideford three miles from Westward Ho! The book published in 1855 was set in the surrounding area and inspired the development of the town for its tourist potential.

The broad sandy expanse here is popular with kite flyers and kite surfers and the beach is great for swimmers and offers great views over Bideford Bay. Surfing is also popular here with surfing gear and tuition available locally.

Behind the sands is Northam Burrows a flat marshy area of dunes and meadows rich in flora and fauna and attracting migratory birds.
