Dartmouth has had a strong maritime connection since the Normans used the deep water port for trading, today fishing and freight are amongst the town's activities and officers are still trained at the Royal Naval College behind the port.

Dartmouth has a wonderful setting rising above the western bank of the River Dart and has a number of lopsided but well preserved old buildings. Annexed to Dartmouth's tourist office backing on to the quayside is The Engine House which has an original Thomas Newcomen engine which was an essential aid to Devon miners for pumping water out of the mines and was the forerunner of James Watt's steam engine.

Dartmouth Castle was one of two fortifications built on either sides of the estuary in the 15th century the other being Kingswear Castle. Dartmouth Castle was built to withstand artillery but was never tested in action and remains well preserved today.
There are also regular ferry trips from Dartmouth to Kingswear where you can explore the remains of Kingwear Castle and also the terminus of the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway is here with the accent on Victorian Nostalgia and a lovely way to view the countryside.
