Buckfastleigh which is just south of Dartmoor sits on both sides of two small streams that flow from the Dartmoor National Park and join together to the east of the town before flowing into the River Dart.
Buckfastleigh was a mill town, with power supplied by the rivers and a central location mills were built in the town and surrounding area for producing wool, corn and paper. The old mills still survive today.
For visitors to the town there are some excellent attractions in the town and close by. The main attractions are Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh Butterfly Farm and South Devon Railway.
The South Devon Railway which goes between the towns of Totnes and Buckfastleigh runs beside the River Dart. The railway has a great collection of locomotives many from the former Great Western railway. Enjoy a great day out with the family on a vintage steam locomotive taking in the excellent rare untouched picturesque scenery which can only be seen by railway.
